Birchwood Place - East
Birchwood Place - East is the first new owned development for Niagara Regional Housing (NRH). The project is an excellent example of urban intensification integrating affordable housing into a community on an existing NRH underdeveloped parcel of land. The new building is on target to be a LEED Silver certified affordable housing project.
The project, located on a 2 acre site, expanded a 1982, 29 unit building, by adding a new 67 unit building, for an overall density of 48 units per acre. The new 3-storey building was scaled to the existing neighbourhood by being well set back from the adjacent houses on the east and south property lines. Located in a mature neighbourhood, the occupants are in close proximity to many existing services, including: a bus stop at the front door; shopping across the street; and, over 10 community services in total within walking distance
