  • Macdonald Zuberec Ensslen Architects Inc.(MZE) has practiced in St. Catharines since 1959 as successors to the practices founded by the late Thomas R. Wiley and Thomas H. Wiley. The practice records of the late C.M. Borter, Norman Mann and Lionel Hesson are all also included in the firms' files, as are practice records from Allen Ensslen Barrett Architects Inc. (AEB).

Regarded as one of the principal architectural practitioners of the Niagara Peninsula, MZE continues to provide ongoing consulting services for a number of Peninsula-based institutions and private clients as well as for specialized projects in other portions of Southern Ontario. A small staff turnover has led to the development of a cohesive and experienced team embodying three principal architects, one staff architect, two architectural technologists, and one intern interior designer. The office is assisted by a full time and part-time administrative staff. This familiarity and continuity within the firm provides the means for creating imaginative, vision-directed solutions to our Clients' needs. The process of field review and contract administration continues the orderly approach embodied in the design and conceptual stages.

During a period of more than 45 years, the firm has developed excellent working relationships with the Building, Fire and Planning Departments of the Niagara Municipalities as well as with such Toronto-based jurisdictional authorities as the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Housing and the Ontario Fire Marshal.

The firm's institutional and commercial client list includes:
the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, the Niagara Parks Commission, Greater Niagara General Hospital, Brock University, Ontario Power Generation, the City of St. Catharines, the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority, the Regional Municipality of Niagara, the Chateau des Charmes Winery, the St. Catharines Y.M.C.A., the Tom Thomson Gallery addition, Owen Sound, the Rodman Hall Arts Centre, St. Catharines, the Canadian Automobile Association, Thorold as well as local schools. The firm's work addresses clients' needs professionally, on time and on budget.

Our list of past projects represents investigation and solution of most design and technical problems normally encountered in contemporary building practice. New solutions to technical and aesthetic problems are constantly under review in line with progress in materials technology, Sensitivity to existing buildings and site conditions are exemplified in our numerous alterations and additions commissions.
