This home is located in a clearing of land at the end of a curving drive. The approach sequence gradually reveals the house, focusing on a double-storey bay window tower that cuts through a steeply-sloping roof. The enclosing wings of the house shelter a small "vestigial" forecourt. This forecourt looks back on the curve of the driveway and leads forward to the steps of the entrance porch, around the bay window and to a modest front door.
On the more private side of the house, the roof is cut back to reveal the two-storey expanse of the dining room. At either end of this curving volume, a porch roof shelters doors from the kitchen, the dressing room, the sauna wing, and the living and family room wing. These doors lead on to a broad terrace that extends the house to the garden and a lake. The ground floor of the house is composed of a sequence of rooms that become more formally defined as they become increasingly private. The octagonal entrance hall leads directly to the living room or to a second hall, which reveals the family room and an additional hall to the private main bedroom quarters. Transition points are demarcated by archways and doorways topped by custom sandblasted glass transoms. To create a more private second floor, the stair is well-removed from the main entrance. A small library on an expanded stair landing and the guest bedroom are separated by a bridge from the children's wing. The two storey volumes on either side of the bridge center the house and relate to the axis of the lake and entrance court. The exterior materials include cedar shingles on the walls and roof, stained wood windows and soffits, and a fieldstone porch and terrace. Interior wall materials include painted drywall, wood mouldings and glass transoms. Floors are marble or hardwood on the ground floor and carpeted throughout the second floor. Light metal handrailswith hardwood inserts decorate the stairs and the balconies of the upper hall. |
