The new Market Hall was completed in 2001 at a cost of $1,500,000. Located in the historic heart of St. Catharines, the Market Hall was intended to complement the architecture of the adjacent to the Lincoln County Courthouse built in 1850. The new structure replaced a canvas covered outdoor walkway that had served the market since 1986 and was considered to be inadequate for current needs.
The vendors wanted to be able to continue to sell “off the back of their trucks”, a function which the new market accommodated through the installation 18 double sized glass overhead doors allowing the vendors to back up to the building. During the summer months the building’s “open able” walls provide a roofed but otherwise open structure. Radiant heating elements suspended from the roof temper the indoor environment during the winter months.
Building materials include stone to complement the Courthouse, metal roofing, glue-lam roof structure supporting exposed fir decking and multi-coloured textured concrete paving material defining market stall locations. The structure is designed to accommodate a variety of additional public activities during non-market times.
