ST. Catharines Cathedral - Elevator and Entry Addition
For the Catholic Church, Ontario

Project
Project Phase
Although the Church Street entrance, with its expansive stairs and platform, will likely endure as the principal and ceremonial entrance, reduced street parking and development of off-street parking to the north required a principal entrance on the originally secondary north façade of the building; this would provide direct access to the north end of the narthex. The new generous all-weather enclosure of a stair and elevator facilitates access to all levels including the basement level for after-church sociability. The elevator provides handicapped accessibility and was sized to recognize the needs of funerals. The original building’s slate roof and stone walls are echoed in those of the resulting new addition, while the spacious interior is enlivened by natural light from the skylight and glazed walls.
