Church of the Transfiguration
For the Anglican Church, Ontario

Project
Project Phase
A challenging alteration. The original church building, dated from the mid-sixties, was basically a gymnasium intended for joint worship and recreational purposes until anticipated congregation growth merited the construction of a purpose designed worship space. Potential parishioners in the nearby developing residential area preferred the ambience of the traditional downtown churches to that of the combined space and stayed away. The languishing parish decided to alter and dedicate the space purely for worship and engaged the Macdonald Zuberec firm for the makeover. The transformation in mood and appearance was achieved by lowering the sidewalls, installing a steeply pitched roof and skylight, installing windows, new interior finishes and pews. The goal was achieved. The firm also designed an adjacent small parish owned seniors apartment, Transfiguration Terrace.
