The new 600 car parking facility replaces a circa. 1975 garage that
was structurally weakening and not used to it’s 500 car capacity for a number
of years. This project is the first initiative of the City’s new Downtown
Revitalization strategy and attempts to better integrate a utilitarian
building loke a parking garage into the existing urban context. This project has been designed with the
environmentally considerate principals of sustainable design as
mandated by LEED® and is targeted to achieve SILVER Certification (32
points). Sustainable Design Features include: · Reduced energy consumption when measured
against the energy performance described by the Model National Energy Code for Buildings. · Open storey design that allows for natural
ventilation through passive air exchange , eliminating the need to mechanical
ventilation. · Rainwater is collected from the roof and
used for non-potable water activities (flushing water conserving low-flow
toilets). · Many of the materials will be locally
produced, sourced from within 800 km of the site. |
